Papuan Toddler Killed by Police Bullet, Family Demands Justice

Download  Two-year-old Merlina was killed by Indonesian police in the restive province of Papua.

She was shot near her house during a police raid to arrest an alleged criminal.

Police say those responsible have been punished within the police force but the family wants proper justice.

Papua is one of the wealthiest, but less developed, parts of Indonesia.

For decades there have been calls for independence from the central government in Jakarta and human rights’ groups accuse security forces of widespread abuses.

Liza Desylanhi went to meet the family in mourning in Merauke, Papua.

Extremism Growing Inside Indonesian Prisons

Download  Indonesian prison authorities have recommended cancelling the life sentences imposed on key players in the Bali bombings eight years ago which killed 202 people.

The men, who prepared the explosives used in the attacks, will have their sentences reduced because of good behaviour behind bars.

However the prisoners are unrepentant. One even declared he'd do the same again.

The head of Indonesia's police counter-terrorism unit says his government has made no serious effort to de-radicalise those imprisoned and he says extremism is growing.

Indonesia Chance to be the Mecca of Islamic Fashion

Download  Indonesia has hopes to become the Mecca of Islamic fashion.

Muslim fashion is growing in popularity in the world’s largest Islamic nation.  

15 years ago it was rare to see a women wearing a headscarf but now it’s a common sight and especially during the holy-month of Ramandan.

Consumer spending surges by about 20 per cent during ths annual religious holiday seaons and in malls across the captial Islamic fashion shows are being held to cash in on the Islamic dollar.

Esther de Jong went along to one of the shows for Asia Calling.

Indonesia’s Volcano Gate-keeper

Download  Indonesia is in the ring of fire, with a string of active volcanoes across the country.

The most active is Merapi, above the ancient Javanese city of Yogyakarta.

Eighty-three-year-old Mbah Marijan is the ‘gatekeeper’ of this volcano - appointed by the Sultan to mediate with the spirits of the mountain.

The Rise of Female Circumcision in Indonesia

Download  Indonesian baby girls are still being circumcised, in spite of a 2006 ban on the practice.

Female circumcision is performed at hospitals and local health centers. Often it will cost no more than 3 dollar.

Most are circumcised with scissors cutting in a very sensitive part of the gentiles.

Even the smallest cut or pinch in the clitoris can lead to sexual and mental difficulties.

But as Esther de Jong reports in Jakarta it’s proving to be a hard custom to ban.
