Evictions and land conflicts are taking place across Cambodia at an alarming rate.

On a recent visit, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in Cambodia said there are serious flaws in the countries court system that are stopping the common people from gaining justice.

As Khortieth Him in Phnom Penh finds out they are turning to God instead.

Cambodian Villagers Evicted for Sugar Plantations

Download  Cambodia's sugar industry is undergoing a revival, but there is a bitter undercurrent to what would otherwise be a great success story.

Hundreds of farmers have been forced off their land, some of them at gunpoint, to make way for sugar cane plantations.

The new plantations are controlled by an alliance of foreign firms and powerful local interests, taking advantage of European Union trade initiatives designed to help least-developed countries.

But rights groups are now concerned that the growing incentives enjoyed by Cambodia's sugar industry will only lead to more rural evictions.

Young Cham Muslims Try to Save Their Culture

Download  In the holy Islamic fasting month, young Cambodian Muslim leaders are meeting to find ways to preserve their cultural heritage.

In Cambodia, Muslims make up just seven percent of the countries 14 million people.

They are known as Cham people and are remnants of the Kingdom of Champa.

Cham Muslims Disappointment at Duch Verdict

Download  Cham Muslims in Cambodia are outraged at the verdict of former Khmer Rouge prison chief Duch.

 

He was found guily of crimes against humanity and responsible for the execution of about 15,000 people but could be free in nineteen years.

 

The minority Muslim community in Cambodia along with Buddist monks were specially targeted by the avowedly atheist Khmer Rouge.

Cambodia Factory Workers

 Download  Cambodia was hit hard by the global economic crisis of 2008 and 09.

Hundreds of garment factories that supplied US companies were closed down leaving thousands out of work.

But 2010 has seen a rebound in the economy and the government has raised the minum wage for garment factory workers by 11 US dollars – so now workers get 61 dollars a month.

Sorn Sarath has the story from Phnom Penh.
