Download “Our investigation shows only 25 percent of the forest is left. We are sending warnings about the destruction in the future. We want the government to prevent more destruction from the rubber plant company. We have only one virgin forest and now it’s being destroyed.”

This is Chut Wutty, a prominent Cambodian environmental campaigner.

Two months ago, he was leading an investigation into illegal logging in the Amazon of Cambodia, the Prey Lang Forest.

Last week, he was shot dead by police.

He was one of the most outspoken activists in the country and had received many death threats in the past.

Borin Noun joins the mourning crowds at Chutt Wutty’s funeral.

Download April 17 marked a tragic turning point in Cambodian history.

37 years ago, Cambodia’s capital of Phnom Penh, known as the Pearl of Asia, fell to the Khmer Rouge.

Khmer Rouge renamed the country Democratic Kampuchea, and turned it into a purely agrarian-based Communist society.

One third of the population died from execution, starvation, disease and overwork under the four-year regime of Khmer Rouge with Pol Pot as the key leader.

At present, the Khmer Rouge Tribunals are taking place, with charges accusing the four top leaders of genocide and crimes against humanity.

Borin Noun revives the history.

Download In 1975, the communist Khmer Rouge regime outlawed land ownership in Cambodia.

More than 30 years later, few Cambodians have land titles and disputes over land are common.

Many are losing their homes to make way for urban development or agri-business.

Some have received compensation - but Amnesty International has documented increasing cases of violent evictions and relocations to squalid sites.

Cambodians are struggling to fight this trend. But one Cambodian monk is taking their cause worldwide.

Heather Stilwell reports.

Download The remote 200,000-hectares of Prey Lang Forest is arguably the Amazon of Cambodia.

Home to the indigenous Kouy people, “Prey Lang” means “our forest”.

Last year, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen approved a 9,000-hectare rubber plantation, despite its status as a protected area.

The deal is part of a joint business initiative between the Cambodian and Vietnamese governments, which say will improve local welfare.

But a recent investigation has revealed the dirty deals made between companies and villagers, and the extent of illegal logging in the forest.

Borin Noun joins the investigation team in the largest intact forest on the Indochina peninsula.
