Filipino Activist Priest Runs for Postal Workers

Download In his last public act before a year-long religious seclusion, activist priest Father Reyes has thrown his support behind Filipino postal workers.

On May 8 he kickstarted a charity run, where he acted as a postman delivering letters from the workers to Philipine President Aquino.

The letters protested the recent string of jobs cuts for people that have worked for company for decades.

Madonna Virola has the story from Manila.

They want to build a “Dwarf City” – a place of their own, where they won’t be discriminated against by the rest of the world.

Now the Philippines priest has a global award to recognise his struggles.

He’s one of six winners of the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize in the United States – the award for environmental heroes fighting at the grassroots.

Three years ago, Father Edwin led a hunger strike that turned the tide against a huge nickel mine on Mindoro island.

Download The Palawan provincial court in the Philippines recently ordered the arrest of former governor Joel Reyes, over the murder of environmentalist and broadcaster Gerardo Ortega.

Ortega was shot on January last year, and died from bullet wounds to his head and body.

Many believe that he was killed because of his strong campaign against mining in Palawan province, described as the Philippine’s last ecological frontier.

To commemorate his struggle, Jofelle Tesorio has this story.
